Emergency Procedures
Emergency Procedures
In the event of an emergency, such as an active threat on campus, shelter-in-place situation, earthquake, or fire -school personnel will follow established protocols to ensure the well-being of everyone on campus. Please note that during real emergencies, staff may not be able to respond to emails or phone calls due to immediate on-site responsibilities or high call volumes. Also please note that depending on the location of the emergency, the procedure and location to retrieve or pick up students is subject to change based on campus and location safety. In emergency situations, parents should not come to campus unless they are notified that it is safe to do so.
For timely information, parents are advised to:
Contact the San Jose Police Department at (408) 277-8900
Contact the East Side Union High School District office at (408) 347-5000
Check their emails frequently for updates from school, district, or SJPD
Please look below to understand what each emergency may look like and what it may entail.

Earthquake
In the event of an earthquake, Santa Teresa High School will follow these steps to ensure student safety:
Duck and Cover: Students and staff will immediately take cover under desks or sturdy furniture and remain there until the earthquake and any aftershocks subside.
Student Accountability: Teachers will use their emergency rosters to account for all students once it is safe to do so.
Evacuation: After an earthquake, administration will determine if evacuation is needed based on the assessment of the grounds and facilities. If damage poses a threat outside of classrooms, administration may require staff and students to remain indoors.
Wait for All-Clear: Parents should not come onto campus until an official all-clear is issued, typically by email or via the district, as hazards like damaged electrical or gas lines may pose safety risks.
Pick-Up Point: If the damage is severe enough, a designated pick-up point will be established on or near campus for parents to safely retrieve their children. Please wait for communication about its location and procedure, typically through Infinite Campus email.
Fire on Campus
In the event of a fire, Santa Teresa High School will implement the following procedures to ensure student safety:
Evacuation: Students and staff will evacuate the buildings to a designated safe location away from flammable structures.
Off-Campus Relocation: If the fire's extent necessitates, students may be transported to an off-campus location for their safety.
Attendance Accountability: Teachers will use emergency rosters to account for all students and will oversee their assigned group throughout the emergency.
Pick-Up Point: If the fire and damage is severe enough, a designated pick-up point will be established on or near campus for parents to safely retrieve their children. Please wait for communication about its location and procedure, typically through Infinite Campus email.
Shelter in Place (Code Blue)
In the event of a "Code Blue" or shelter-in-place situation, Santa Teresa High School will follow these procedures to maintain safety:
Possible Causes: Shelter-in-place may be initiated due to a nearby police incident, or a potential threat such as a wild animal that requires students to remain indoors.
Remain Indoors: Students and staff will stay inside classrooms and lock their doors and windows. Instruction will continue as normal.
Restricted Movement: Bathroom use and exiting the classroom will be extremely limited to ensure safety.
Do Not Come Onto Campus: Parents should not attempt to enter campus during a shelter-in-place, as this could expose them to potential risks.
Pick-Up Point: Once authorities determine that the threat has been sufficiently mitigated, and inform the school that such is the case, a designated pick-up point will be established on or near campus for parents to safely retrieve their children.
Active Threat (Code Red)
In the event of a "Code Red", which is an active threat or shooter situation, Santa Teresa High School will follow these critical procedures to protect students and staff:
Run, hide, and defend: In the event of a Code Red announcement, students and staff should immediately run if possible, hide, or barricade themselves in defensive positions.
Barricade and Silence: Students and staff will remain indoors, barricade themselves inside classrooms or secure areas, and stay silent to minimize risk.
Police Lead Response: San Jose Police will take full control of the situation and confirm whether the threat is credible. Campus will be on lockdown until cleared by police. If the threat is credible, police will conduct a clearing of the campus.
Do Not Come Onto Campus: Parents should not attempt to enter campus during a Code Red, as this could expose them to the threat and hinder emergency response efforts.
Pick-Up Point: A designated pick-up point will be established on or near campus only after San Jose Police determine it is safe and appropriate.
We urge parents to remain patient and follow updates from law enforcement and school officials during such emergencies. Your cooperation is vital to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
